Income Protection
Your income is vital to maintaining your lifestyle and meeting your financial commitments. Income Protection is a long-term insurance policy designed to provide a regular income if you're unable to work due to ill health or injury.
Why It Matters
Many employers provide only limited sick pay - typically full pay for three months, then half pay for a further three - and UK Statutory Sick Pay is currently around £116.75 per week, paid for up to 28 weeks. For most people that's nowhere near enough to cover a mortgage and everyday bills. If you're self-employed, you can't access Statutory Sick Pay at all, which makes Income Protection especially important.
How Much Could I Get?
Income Protection typically pays a regular income - usually 50-65% of gross income - until you recover, retire, or the policy ends, with deferred periods commonly ranging from 4 to 52 weeks. Many policies also include extras such as trauma lump sums, hospital cash, physiotherapy, mental health counselling and return-to-work support.
