Adverse credit FAQs
Can I get a mortgage with bad credit?
Yes. Specialist lenders exist specifically to help people with adverse credit histories. The terms may differ from standard mortgages — such as requiring a larger deposit or paying a slightly higher rate — but homeownership is still achievable.
How much deposit do I need with adverse credit?
Generally, a larger deposit improves your chances. Depending on the severity of your credit issues, you may need between 10%–25% deposit. Our advisers can give you a clear picture based on your specific circumstances.
How long do credit issues stay on my file?
Most credit issues — including defaults, CCJs, and missed payments — remain on your credit file for six years from the date they were registered. The older the issue, the less impact it typically has on your application.
Will applying affect my credit score?
A soft search (used for initial research) doesn't affect your score. A full mortgage application does leave a hard footprint. We ensure any formal applications are targeted to lenders most likely to approve, minimising unnecessary searches.
Can I remortgage with adverse credit?
Yes. Many people with historic credit issues successfully remortgage. As your credit profile improves over time, you may also find you qualify for increasingly competitive rates.
